Presence: a Means to Weathering

Immersive Design

Clay, Maya

One sociological model for the progression of Black womens' health is referred to as "weathering" in that instead of quality of life improving over time it tends to worsen. Data collected on women from both child baring years and during menopause affirms this disheartening trend. Having grieved someone or something nearly every semester at Penn which has resulted in significant increases in anxiety and depression, I have become acutely aware of my weathering and wanted to to create a built environment that would embody a combative tool to this weathering and anxiety. Thus, Presence re-contextualizes conventional Afrocentric motifs at an architectural scale to create a built environment that evokes a sense of an Afro-futuristic 'safe space' that promotes wholistic, dynamic and interactive intentionality, wellness and immersion in the present.
