We collaborate with other living organisms on a daily basis. With unprecedented levels of climate change and air pollution, this project explores a bio-based solution in which we cultivate symbiotic relationships with nature. Algae in particular filters out about 50% of the CO2 in our atmosphere and has the potential to improve the polluted air in our homes and in our workplaces, while requiring only water, nutrients, and sunlight to thrive.

The air purifier serves as an object in the home, a decorative choice. When I think of home, I think of my mother’s passion for Chinese blue and white porcelain and the valuable pieces present in my childhood home. In this project, I imagine a functional and ornamental piece that applies elements of Chinese design, culture, and identity, to incorporate ancient techniques of making with novel biodesign applications to address the present climate crisis.
